The test is particularly applicable to stone matrix asphalt (SMA) or open-graded porous asphalt mixtures. The sample is placed in the special Draindown Basket in a forced-air oven on a pre-weighed paper plate for one hour. The amount of draindown is measured as that portion that separates itself from the sample and is deposited onto the plate outside the basket. Paper plates should be obtained locally. Stainless steel HM-56 1/4in (6.3mm) mesh and HM-56A No.8 baskets are 4.25x5.5in (108x140mm), Dia. x H with an added 1in (25mm) bottom skirt. A convenient bail-type handle is provided. Est. The ends are pulled apart in a liquid-filled trough at specified speed and temperature. Gilson offers mechanical and electronic speed control testing machines, and complete temperature controlled consoles incorporating the mechanical testing machine. Ductility Testing Machines have 3 speed selections of 2.5,10 and 50mm/min. and can test up to 3 briquets simultaneously. A single bronze lead screw mounted above water level prevents agitation of water and premature rupture of specimens. A travelling pointer indicates exact position of the carriage on a scale attached to the edge of the trough until automatic stop at 1500mm maximum travel. The polished stainless steel trough has a liquid overflow connection. Gears are bronze; other parts are brass. Outside dimensions of trough are 74x11-3/4x6-3/8" (1880x298x162mm), LxH. LP-1 Mechanical Ductility Tester maintains vibration-free constant speed via DC direct motor drive and gear box with shift lever. LP-4 Electronic Ductility Tester uses a solid state speed controller with feedback to continually adjust the DC motor. Both units meet ASTM, AASHTO and other specifications when used with LP-12 temperature console or other means of maintaining liquid temperature within ±0.5°C (0.9°F). LP-12 Controlled Temperature Console is a self-contained unit incorporating the LP-1 machine along with liquid heating, cooling, and circulation capability for ductility testing over a temperature range of 0-49°C (32-120°F) ±0.1°F. The system includes 1/2-hp refrigeration unit and two 750-watt incoloy immersion heaters with high liquid circulating capacity. Flow is regulated in three directions by valves with cutoff once temperature equilibrium is reached. Model LP-12 has 1/4" (6.4 mm) interior of white polypropylene and 3/8" (9.55mm) thick exterior are suitable for studies using sodium chloride solutions.
